Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork in one interface

Ivan Mehta at TechCrunch reports Anthropic merged the front ends for Claude chat and Cowork so people stop guessing which tab fits the task. Chat, Cowork, and Artifacts share one window; Claude Design works anywhere in Claude.

The company said customers often struggled to pick the right surface. Auto-routing is the fix. Anthropic is also adding presentation and document features: create, edit, and present slides (export PDF or PowerPoint), plus Docs for sectioning, questions, and comments.

Interface consolidation sounds dull. It’s how assistants become workplaces.

We’re treating this as Anthropic’s bid to make Claude a place you stay, not a chat you visit.

Mehta’s write-up is clear: one window, automatic routing, Artifacts and Claude Design available without tab gymnastics. Docs and Slides land as first-class work surfaces with export and sharing. That’s a direct answer to Gemini’s workspace-shaped habits and to ChatGPT’s sprawling UI—TechCrunch even hopes OpenAI takes the cue.

Useful AI earns its keep when it removes mode confusion. If the model routes “make me a deck” to the right toolchain without a seminar on product taxonomy, that’s real usability. We’re for it.

The harm if it scales poorly: silent routing that does the wrong kind of work with the wrong permissions, and document features that blur who authored what in collaborative edits. Auto-route is delightful until it isn’t transparent.

I’m watching whether users can see and override the route, and how shared Docs/Slides handle provenance when Claude drafts half the page.
