Claude can now analyze your spending with its new Personal Finance tool
Nov 5, 2026, 10:00 AM · TechCrunch

Anthropic's Personal Finance connects Claude to banks and cards via Plaid for read-only spending answers — no ads, no Anthropic loan products, and chats in the hub kept out of training.
Why it matters
Money talk is where assistants either become useful or become a privacy incident. Anthropic is rolling out Personal Finance in beta this week for Pro, Max, and Ultra users in the U.S., letting Claude connect to bank and credit-card accounts through Plaid and answer questions about balances, transactions, and categories.
Access is read-only — no moving, managing, or investing money. Anthropic stresses no ads or sponsored recommendations, and no Anthropic credit cards, loans, or savings accounts, so answers stay unconflicted. ChatGPT shipped a similar connect-your-accounts finance experience in May.
This is Claude catching up on a high-trust vertical while trying to keep the no-ads brand intact.
From the desk
We're glad the defaults start narrow. Read-only via Plaid, limited fields — bank name, account name and type, last four digits, balances, credit limits, up to two years of transactions — and hub chats excluded from training. That is the minimum adult posture for wiring a model into your ledger.
The product pitch is plain speech on top of your books: where did the money go, is this more than usual, flag duplicate charges and creeping fees, explain APR with a personal interest total. Catching up to ChatGPT matters less than whether Claude stays boringly trustworthy when the category gets lucrative. Anthropic's broader push into Claude for Legal and Financial Services shows the company wants professional money workflows; Personal Finance is the consumer wedge.
I will use tools that help people see their burn without upselling a card. The downside if Plaid connections normalize faster than user understanding: phishing lookalikes, over-sharing of two-year histories, and pressure to add write actions later. Keep it read-only until the security and UX stories are dull.
Context
U.S. paid Claude tiers get the beta first. OpenAI's May launch set the expectation that major assistants would offer account-linked finance Q&A. Anthropic is differentiating on ad-free positioning in the same week WIRED chronicled the rest of the industry racing into chatbot ads.
Who feels it
- Claude Pro/Max/Ultra users in the U.S
- A way to interrogate real spending in everyday language without leaving the chat.
- Privacy-conscious consumers
- Clearer data boundaries than many finance apps — still a meaningful account-link decision.
- OpenAI
- Competitive parity pressure on finance UX and trust messaging.
- Banks and fintechs
- Another large AI surface sitting on Plaid rails and transaction categorization.
What to watch
- Whether Anthropic keeps write actions and product placements permanently off the table.
- Incident response if a connected-account bug or prompt injection touches finance data.
- Expansion beyond U.S. paid tiers.
- How categorization quality compares to ChatGPT's finance tools in real households.
