Conversational Gemini navigation comes to Apple CarPlay

Google's Gemini now talks drivers through Maps on iPhone dashboards in the US, a year after Android Auto, without the personal-data features Android just got.

Why it matters

Conversational Gemini in Google Maps is live for US CarPlay users, with Google saying a global rollout is under way. Drivers tap the Gemini icon on the car's display and can ask layered questions, like finding a place to visit and then routing there while avoiding tolls, or report traffic problems by voice.

It took close to 12 months to reach CarPlay after Android Auto. And per The Verge, Google made no mention of the Personal Intelligence features it announced a day earlier for Android Auto, which let Gemini draw on Gmail, Calendar, Photos, YouTube and more.

From the desk

We think hands-free, multi-step voice help is one of the better uses of AI in a car. Fiddling with a screen while moving is the real danger, and an assistant that can chain a request into a route keeps eyes up. Getting this onto iPhone-driven dashboards, not just Android, puts it in front of a lot more drivers.

The caveat is the obvious one. Conversation is still a distraction, just a different kind. An assistant that invites back-and-forth can pull attention even when hands stay on the wheel, and a confident wrong answer about a closure or a turn is worse on the road than on a phone at home. We'd want to see Google say how it limits that.

The missing personalization is the more interesting tell. On Android, Gemini can now reach into a user's email and calendar while driving. On CarPlay, for now, it can't, or at least Google isn't saying it can. That gap could be a platform constraint, a privacy decision, or just sequencing. I'm watching which, because an assistant that knows your inbox is far more useful and far more sensitive in a shared car.

Context

Google introduced Gemini to Android Auto last year, so CarPlay drivers have waited nearly a year for parity. The Verge says it has asked Google for regional availability details and whether CarPlay will get the personalization update. The feature is reached by tapping the Gemini icon in Google Maps on the car's infotainment display, so for now it lives inside Google's own navigation app on the dashboard.
