Eric Schmidt reportedly owns about half as much of Anthropic as CEO Dario Amodei

An early bet of tens of millions may leave the former Google chief holding a stake worth billions in a safety-branded lab, which says a lot about who wins AI.
Why it matters
Bloomberg reports that Eric Schmidt owns about 1% of Anthropic, built from an investment of tens of millions of dollars in the company's 2021 Series A, when PitchBook data put its valuation at $461 million. TechCrunch notes that Reuters has reported CEO Dario Amodei holds about 2%.
Anthropic is widely expected to go public before year end, and top-end estimates put its value as high as $2 trillion. At that number, Schmidt's stake would add as much as $20 billion to a net worth Bloomberg puts at $57.5 billion. Neither Schmidt nor Anthropic immediately commented.
From the desk
This is a brief, and the figures are estimates stacked on estimates: a reported stake, a reported CEO holding, and a top-end valuation that has not been tested by a public market. We treat it as a signal, not a ledger.
The signal is still worth naming. The financial upside of frontier AI is concentrating among a small set of early backers, and a former Google CEO holding half as much of a leading lab as its own chief executive shows how early capital compounds. Schmidt also backs Mistral, General Intuition and Reflection AI, which makes him one of the more widely spread bettors on who builds the next generation of models.
For Anthropic specifically, ownership is a governance question. The company has positioned itself around safety and public benefit, and has reportedly prepared supervoting power for founders ahead of an IPO. When a single outside investor holds a stake this size, and the payoff is measured in tens of billions, it is fair to ask how much influence comes with it, even when none is claimed. We have no reporting suggesting Schmidt exerts any.
The broader point: the IPO, if it happens on anything like the expected timeline, will turn AI's paper fortunes into real ones. That is good for the investors who took early risk, and it will intensify pressure to grow fast at exactly the moment the company argues for caution.
I'm watching the IPO filing, which should finally disclose the actual ownership table.
Context
Schmidt has invested actively since leaving the Google CEO role in 2011, through Tomorrow Ventures, Innovation Endeavors Management and his family office, Hillspire.
