Gemini can now call businesses for you so you don’t have to wait on hold

Google is launching an early experiment on Pixel 11 that lets Gemini place entire calls to local businesses: reservations, stock checks, appointment changes. Users tell the Gemini app to call; the model introduces itself, navigates phone trees, waits on hold, and handles the conversation while a live transcript stays on screen.

Hold music is a small tax that adds up. Automating it is useful AI in the plainest sense — if the business on the other end knows it’s talking to a machine, and if the human can seize the line when nuance matters. Google is limiting the early preview to Gemini paid subscribers in the Phone by Google Public Beta on Pixel 11 in the U.S.

We’re for this when it works as advertised. Calling ahead to ask if a part is in stock or to move a dentist slot is exactly the busywork agents should eat. Last year’s “Call for me” could ask about products but didn’t let people jump in; this version adds takeover and a live transcript. That control surface is the difference between a helpful proxy and a runaway conversation.

The downside is social, not sci-fi. Restaurants and clinics will field more AI callers that introduce themselves as Gemini. Some will hang up. Some will treat the call as second-class. Some will adapt. We’re also watching disclosure culture: the feature should stay loud about being an agent, not slip into sounding like a hurried human.

Meta is reportedly building a similar automated-call path for Muse — with the twist that those calls might involve a human behind the scenes. Two giants racing to own the phone tree means local businesses become the unpaid test lab. Useful for callers; uneven for the people answering.

I’m watching early Pixel 11 reports on hold-time success, how often users take over, and whether Google expands beyond the paid-beta gate without diluting the transcript-and-takeover safeguards. Hold relief is a feature. Impersonation is a failure mode. Keep them apart.
