Google’s Universal Cart shopping tool launches in the USGoogle launches its ‘universal’ online shopping cart ahead of the holidays

Timed for Black Friday, Google's Universal Cart arrives in Search and Gemini — with Gmail and YouTube next — as Big Tech bets bots will do our shopping.
Why it matters
Universal Cart is rolling out in the US across the Gemini app and Search AI Mode, collecting products from multiple retailers in one place with price-drop and restock alerts and promo codes. Users can pay via Google Wallet, which can weigh each saved card's perks, or hand items off to a merchant's own cart.
Google plans to bring the cart into Gmail and YouTube but hasn't given a timeline. The Verge notes a demo suggests you can't check out from multiple retailers at once, and that OpenAI, Meta and Shopify are all pushing agent shopping too.
From the desk
The holiday timing tells you this is as much about spending as saving. A cart that lives inside Search, Gemini and eventually Gmail and YouTube means shopping intent follows you everywhere Google does.
That's convenient. It's also a quiet expansion of the surfaces where buying is one tap away. Receipts and order confirmations live in Gmail; product videos live on YouTube. Connecting them to one cart is powerful, and we'd want clear controls over how that data is combined.
The single-retailer checkout limit is a reminder that this is a staging area, not yet a true universal agent buying for you. That's honestly fine for now — fewer autonomous purchases means fewer costly mistakes.
Where this leads if it scales: the storefront fades and the assistant becomes the mall. Retailers, and shoppers, should think about who sets the rules in that mall.
