Google’s Gemini Can Now Make Calls for You on Pixel Phones

Google spent nearly a decade chasing assistant-placed calls. Duplex booked tables, then went away. Call for Me is the LLM-era rematch — exclusive to Pixel 11 phones in the U.S., English only, requiring a Gemini subscription and enrollment in the Phone by Google public beta.

The pitch is mundane and valuable: tell Gemini to call the hardware store about a tool, or the barber for a haircut. The chatbot asks follow-ups, introduces itself, navigates menus, waits on hold, and keeps a live transcript on-screen so the owner can jump in.

WIRED’s framing is the right one for the desk: robocalls with a new meaning. The same stack that screens spam and runs Hold for Me / Direct My Call / Scam Detection is now allowed to originate the conversation. That flips the power dynamic from defense to offense on the public switched network.

Our read is cautiously optimistic. Call screening taught people that an assistant on the line can be useful. Extending that to outbound business errands is a fair product bet — if the bot knows when to stop.

Google’s spokesperson told WIRED the company wants users to stress-test accents and noisy environments, and that Gemini will “politely” hang up when a business can’t accommodate the request. That’s the failure mode that matters. Endless clarify-loops trap clerks. Abrupt disconnects burn goodwill. Polite exit is the minimum bar for useful AI here.

Hard limits help. Emergency services are out. Users can hand Gemini a number when search fails — tattoo artists without much web presence, for example. The voice matches Gemini Live, even if the preferred voice has an accent. Those details sound small; they’re how people decide whether the call feels like help or like a stranger using their identity.

The trajectory Wired sketches is the one we’re watching: phone AI calling phone AI. Pizza My Heart’s text chatbot already takes pizza orders. It doesn’t seem far off that a diner asks their phone to call a restaurant and an agent answers. Machines debating stuffed crust is comedy until neither side discloses, and a human never gets a word.

We want Call for Me to succeed as a secretary feature — transcript visible, takeover one tap away, no emergency lines, clear self-introduction. We don’t want a world where every local desk job is training data for unpaid hold-queue robots. The evidence so far supports a careful beta. Scale without those guardrails is how useful AI becomes ambient spam.
