Muse sure looks a lot like OpenClawGoogle tests buying from Walmart-owned Flipkart through Gemini and AI Mode in India

Google is testing a Buy button that drops Flipkart checkout inside Gemini and AI Mode for some India shoppers—commerce moving from recommend to complete.
Why it matters
TechCrunch reports Google has begun testing direct purchases from Walmart-owned Flipkart through Gemini and AI Mode in India. Selected users see a Buy button on some Flipkart listings—smartphones, electronics, mobile accessories—that opens a Flipkart checkout flow without leaving the AI interface.
The early test is limited; other users still get ordinary Flipkart listings without a buy path. Google plans a broader rollout later in October, ahead of India’s festive shopping season.
This is the moment AI shopping stops being “here are options” and starts being “tap Buy.” Rivals including OpenAI are racing the same shift. Who owns the checkout owns the margin—and the liability.
From the desk
We’re reading this as distribution muscle meeting a festive calendar, not a finished commerce stack. Flipkart already partners with Google on “agentic” shopping in India; this test makes the click real. Google also holds a minority stake from a roughly $350 million 2024 investment, so the partnership is capital as well as code.
Useful AI here is straightforward: fewer tab hops between “what should I buy?” and “it’s ordered.” If the checkout stays Flipkart-branded—as TechCrunch observed, distinct from Google’s earlier Universal Commerce Protocol demo of a Google-hosted checkout—retailers keep their flow while Gemini becomes the shelf.
The downside if it scales unevenly: Amazon listings in the same interface lacked a Buy button in the experience TechCrunch saw. That’s a preference signal dressed as a feature test. Shoppers get convenience; competing merchants get second-class discovery. Privacy and payment trust also move into the chat surface—one wrong redirect and the AI wrapper owns the blame.
I’m watching October’s broader flip. If Buy stays Flipkart-only while rivals sit as dead links, this stops looking like an open protocol story and starts looking like preferred-partner commerce.
Context
Jagmeet Singh, TechCrunch, September 26, 2026, citing people familiar with the matter and an experience TechCrunch saw. A Google spokesperson said the company is always testing new features and had no further details. Flipkart did not immediately comment.
Who feels it
- India shoppers
- Limited test now; wider Gemini/AI Mode checkout expected later in October if the experiment holds.
- Flipkart / Walmart
- Preferred Buy path inside Google AI interfaces is a festive-season distribution win.
- Amazon and other retailers
- Surfacing without a Buy button in the same AI UI is a competitive warning, not a technical footnote.
What to watch
- October broader rollout timing versus festive sales calendars
- Whether Buy expands beyond Flipkart or stays partner-exclusive
- How UCP-style Google-hosted checkout coexists with retailer-branded flows
