OpenAI and Grab’s GO Forward with AI aims to train 30,000 driver, delivery, and merchant partners — practical skills, not another chatbot demo.

Why it matters

OpenAI and Grab launched GO Forward with AI, a two-year regional skilling programme meant to help 30,000 Grab driver-, delivery-, and merchant-partners build practical AI skills for work and small businesses. It starts in Singapore and expands to Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines later this year, then Malaysia and Vietnam in 2027.

This sits inside OpenAI for Singapore and builds on a partnership that already powers Grab’s Driver AI Assistant for close to 500,000 drivers. The bet is that curiosity about ChatGPT becomes competence — and that platform workers get tools usually reserved for bigger teams.

From the desk

We’re inclined to give this one the benefit of the doubt on usefulness — with eyes open about who owns the upside. Grab’s Singapore survey said half of driver and delivery partners already use AI tools; among those who don’t, 87% were open to trying. ChatGPT was the tool they knew best, and many wanted to grow or start a business. Workshops aimed at sales patterns, promotions, demand planning, dashboards, simple sites, and expansion plans match those goals better than generic prompt theater.

Oliver Jay (OpenAI International) and Ong Chin Yin (Grab organisational capability) framed the programme as confidence-building for merchants and platform workers. Training GrabAcademy trainers and adapting OpenAI Academy curriculum by country is the right shape if the goal is lasting capacity instead of a one-off photo op with Minister of State Foo Cexiang. Driver Suhada Abdullah’s account — workshops moving idea to execution for a family hawker business and side projects — is the human proof point OpenAI wants you to remember.

The downside is structural. Skills training that runs through a superapp and a frontier lab can raise incomes and also deepen dependency on those platforms’ tools, data, and terms. “Level the playing field” language is earned only if partners can take what they learn to tools beyond Grab’s stack — and if agentic features like ChatGPT Work don’t silently move bargaining power toward the platforms that already intermediate their labor. Thirty thousand people is meaningful and still a slice of Grab’s wider partner base; execution quality across six countries will decide whether this is development or marketing.

I’m watching completion and follow-through metrics OpenAI and Grab have not yet published, whether Malaysia and Vietnam 2027 cohorts keep the hands-on workshop model, and whether Driver AI Assistant usage patterns change after GO Forward graduates return to the road. The trajectory if this becomes normal is AI literacy as a labor benefit in the gig economy — useful when it compounds worker agency, extractive when it mainly trains people to feed the platform better.

Context

OpenAI Global Affairs post dated Sep 23, 2026, announcing GO Forward with AI with Grab; half-day in-person workshops; prior Driver AI Assistant collaboration since 2024.

Who feels it

Grab driver, delivery, and merchant partners
Access to structured AI workshops for business and workflow tasks; value depends on local adaptation and time to attend.
Grab
Strengthens partner capability narrative and ties skilling to existing OpenAI-powered driver tools.
OpenAI
Soft-power distribution play in Southeast Asia under the OpenAI for Singapore banner.
Regional policymakers
A template for public-private AI skilling — worth tracking for labor outcomes, not only launch optics.

What to watch

  1. Published completion rates and partner outcome metrics after the Singapore cohort.
  2. Thailand, Indonesia, and Philippines launch details later this year.
  3. Whether GrabAcademy-trained trainers sustain the programme without OpenAI on stage.
  4. Spillover into Driver AI Assistant adoption and merchant tools beyond workshops.
