OpenAI partners with America’s SBDC to train advisors and run workshops, alongside a report claiming about 4 million small-firm employees used its tools in one mid-September week.

Why it matters

OpenAI says it will train around 150 Small Business Development Center advisors through OpenAI Academy’s Community Trainer Program, aiming to reach at least 1,000 small businesses via in-person training plus broader advising. America’s SBDC network serves about 1 million entrepreneurs a year.

The companion report, Small Businesses, Bigger Capabilities, says roughly 4 million employees at firms under 500 people used OpenAI tools in the week of September 9–15, with nearly one in five of those users at businesses under 10 people. Agentic output tokens for products like ChatGPT Work and Codex rose to two-thirds of small-business output in August, up from one-third in April. Case anecdotes include restaurants comparing menu prices and a trainer booking outreach with ChatGPT Work.

From the desk

We’re glad to see distribution through trusted local advisors, not just another webinar funnel.

Small teams without specialists are exactly where useful AI can pay rent — marketing, ops, light finance — if humans stay in the loop on customer-facing and compliance work. SBDC credibility matters more than Academy branding. The 4 million weekly-user figure is OpenAI’s own metric; we’ll treat it as directional.

I’m watching whether the industry-specific guides stay practical and whether advisors are trained to push back on hype. Scaling agentic tokens inside tiny firms is powerful and risky if invoices and legal letters go out unchecked.

We’ll cheer hands-on workshops that leave owners with a plan. We’ll keep asking who owns the mistakes when the agent drafts the wrong price or pitch.
