Introducing the Australian Youth Safety Blueprint

OpenAI’s September 18 company post introduces the Australian Youth Safety Blueprint as a roadmap for protecting young people using AI and a contribution to Australian policy. It sets six pillars spanning AI literacy, age-appropriate safeguards, privacy-protective age assurance, connections to real-world crisis support, and accessible parental controls—framing how responsible AI should work for teens and how companies should be accountable for youth risks.

In August, OpenAI began rolling out ChatGPT for Teens in Australia as a new default experience for users identified as 13–17, with safeguards designed around developmental needs, building on parental controls, under-18 policies, and age assurance. The post argues safety responsibility should not fall primarily on young people or families; companies must build protections in from the start, and more work remains.

OpenAI positions Australia as able to help shape evidence-based standards that protect youth while preserving AI’s learning and creative benefits, and invites collaboration with teens, parents, educators, researchers, and policymakers.

We’re for defaults that treat teens as teens—not miniature adults with the same product surface—and we will judge this blueprint by product behavior, not pillar count.

Age assurance plus parental controls and crisis-support links are the right shape if they actually fire when a conversation turns harmful. Making ChatGPT for Teens the Australian default for identified 13–17 users is more serious than a PDF. The accountability line—companies own the build, not kids—is the standard we want exported.

Useful AI for young people means literacy and creative tools with hard rails. The risk is performative policy tourism: a national blueprint that softens scrutiny while teen defaults lag elsewhere. I’m watching independent evaluations of the teen experience, how age assurance fails open or closed, and whether Australian standards get copied or ignored by other markets.
