The Lenfest Institute grows landmark program with expanded OpenAI support

In a joint September 28 announcement, the Lenfest Institute for Journalism and OpenAI said the Lenfest AI Collaborative and Fellowship Program will expand with a new $5 million commitment from OpenAI plus up to $5 million in software credits and engineering support—doubling OpenAI’s prior support.

Since a 2024 launch with AI engineering fellows in 11 major American news organizations, the program embeds full-time AI technologists to drive business innovation, guardrails, and responsible adoption while preserving human editorial judgment. Lenfest will invite a new cohort of news organizations; some fellows are expected to stay on as full-time employees.

We’re for embedded engineers in newsrooms when the mission is sustainability and standards—not content spam. Local journalism needs practical AI help on revenue, research, and product without surrendering the edit.

Useful AI in the public interest looks like this fellowship model more than another chatbot landing page. Doubling funding and credits is material. The test is whether new cohort papers show measurable business and reporting outcomes—or only vendor goodwill.

I’m watching independence. OpenAI money in the newsroom is a conflict to manage in daylight: clear policies, no model-flattering coverage norms, and fellows who can recommend non-OpenAI tools when better. Lenfest’s framing around trust and ethical policies is necessary; enforcement is everything.

If the program scales carefully, it strengthens the civic layer AI is otherwise hollowing out. If it becomes a soft distribution channel for one lab’s stack, newsrooms should walk.
