The Pentagon is putting tailored versions of ChatGPT and Grok behind a secure portal, making commercial frontier models part of routine defense work without consumer data channels.
Why it matters
The Department of Defense has added ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government to GenAI.mil, a centralized portal launched last year. TechCrunch reports access for 3 million civilian and military personnel and more than 1.7 million unique users onboarded.
The portal is designed to keep sensitive government data out of ordinary consumer channels, and its official military version is exempt from data collection difficult to avoid in consumer products. ChatGPT Mil targets unclassified administrative, logistics, planning, and policy work; the Defense Department described Grok in broader mission and warfighter terms.

The asymmetry between the two descriptions is revealing. ChatGPT Mil is framed around documents, projects, and custom GPTs. Grok for Government is framed around mission speed, knowledge continuity, collaboration, acquisition research, and supply chains. Those are positioning claims, not evidence either system is suitable for operational decisions.
