Meta’s Muse Could Upend All Kinds of Businesses. It Hasn’t YetYou can generate and edit Google Docs files directly in Gemini chats now

Gemini can now edit the files it makes without sending users to another app, which is a small change that pushes chat closer to becoming the place where office work happens.
Why it matters
Google is letting all Gemini users generate, preview, and edit PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT, and code files directly inside the chat. PDF editing works on web and mobile. The other formats are web-only for now.
Users can open documents full screen, highlight text to ask questions or request changes, and do things like select a table and ask for it to become a graph. Earlier this year Gemini could only generate and download files. Now the edit loop stays in one place.
From the desk
We think this is a sensible, useful upgrade. The friction of generating a draft in one window, downloading it, opening it somewhere else, and pasting it back for revisions is exactly the kind of busywork AI should remove. Highlight-and-ask editing is a natural way to work with a document.
It is also a competitive move. Anthropic shipped document and presentation editing inside Claude chats earlier this year. Google already had Gemini inside Docs through the side bar. What is changing is the direction of travel: instead of AI living inside the office apps, the office apps start living inside the AI.
That shift is the part I'm watching. If the chat window becomes where documents get made and revised, the assistant shapes more of the final wording, structure, and numbers that end up in reports and decks. That is convenient. It also raises the stakes on errors. A chatbot that confidently turns a table into the wrong chart, or quietly rewrites a sentence in a contract, is a bigger problem when it happens inside the file itself.
The practical advice for teams is boring and important: keep a human review step on anything that leaves the building, and check whether edits are easy to see and undo. Google has not detailed that in what we read, so it is worth testing before relying on it.
Overall, this is useful AI doing ordinary work well. The open question is how much of the document workflow people are comfortable handing to the chat, and whether the tools make the AI's changes transparent enough to trust.
Context
Google added file generation and downloads to Gemini earlier in 2026. Gemini was already available inside Workspace apps such as Google Docs, so this update moves editing in the other direction, into the standalone Gemini app.
Who feels it
- Office workers
- Fewer steps to draft and revise documents, slides, and spreadsheets, especially on the web.
- Developers
- Code and Markdown files can now be previewed and edited within the chat rather than copied out.
- Enterprises
- More document creation inside an AI chat raises the need for review habits and clear change tracking.
