ChatGPT can peek at your Chrome tabs now

ChatGPT’s Chrome extension can read your open tabs and — in Work — drive the browser like a junior assistant sitting in your sidebar.
Why it matters
The Verge reports that with ChatGPT’s Chrome extension installed, OpenAI says ChatGPT can view browser tabs when you tag Chrome in the web or desktop app. A demo shows comparing three open sofa shopping tabs. Sample prompts include filling a registration form and stopping before submit, building a vendor comparison sheet from open tabs, drafting an email to a contractor, and filling a dentist form while adding the appointment to calendars.
OpenAI also updated ChatGPT in the sidebar with full chat history, and says ChatGPT Work can “control” Chrome tabs for tasks like sending messages, filling forms, or downloading files — similar to Google’s Gemini-powered auto browse — plus organize or group tabs. Atlas, OpenAI’s own browser, is gone.
From the desk
Atlas is dead; the extension is the beachhead. That’s a quieter strategy and maybe a smarter one: meet people in Chrome instead of asking them to switch browsers.
The upside is real. Comparing vendors across tabs or drafting from an event brief is the kind of busywork AI should eat. The downside is equally real: once an assistant can see tabs and drive forms, every malicious prompt and every over-permissioned Work seat becomes a data-exfil and action risk.
We’re glad the sample flow says “stop before submitting.” That should be the default pattern, not a demo flourish. I’m watching how clearly OpenAI separates view-only tab context from Work’s control mode — and what happens the first time an agent submits something it shouldn’t.
Context
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas browser has been discontinued; the company is investing in Chrome extension capabilities instead.
