Google now lets you chat with Gmail, Docs, and Keep

Jess Weatherbed reports Google is rolling out voice assistant modes for Gmail, Docs, and Keep — Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live — so users can manage the apps by talking. The features were previewed at Google I/O in May and are rolling out globally in English on mobile starting today.

Gmail Live, on iOS and Android for Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra, is meant to pull details from the inbox without keyword search. Google's example is asking when a kid's next school event is; the assistant summarizes verbally and links email sources in an onscreen transcript. Follow-ups stay in the same conversation, and users can interrupt mid-sentence. Docs Live, on iOS and Android for AI Pro and Ultra, turns conversational descriptions into structured documents, summarizes long files, and, with permission, pulls from Gmail, Drive, Chat, and the web. Keep Live, Android only, Pro and Ultra, transcribes natural speech into notes — Google's example is adding 'ingredients for pesto' to a shopping list. All three are 'coming soon' for Workspace business customers.

This is Gemini Live being bolted onto the three apps people actually live in, then sold back as a subscription feature. Plus gets Gmail only. Docs and Keep sit on Pro and Ultra. Keep is Android-only. Workspace, where the interesting mailboxes and docs are, is a promise. The product is stratified on purpose.

The Gmail example is the privacy argument Google does not make. A voice agent that can find a school event anywhere in the inbox is an agent that reads the inbox. The onscreen transcript with source links is the accountability feature. It is also a record of how much mail Gemini just indexed in a spoken session. Docs pulling Gmail, Drive, Chat, and the web 'if granted permission' is the same pattern: the permission dialog is the product, because without those connectors the voice layer is a dictation toy.

Signal Desk's read: hands-free Workspace is how Google keeps Gemini from being a tab people forget. ChatGPT and Claude do not sit inside Gmail. The catch is that 'Live' is English-only mobile at launch, plan-gated, and not on business accounts. Consumer inbox-and-notes is the beachhead. The enterprise rollout is the one that would actually change work, and it is the one without a date.

Interruptibility and multi-turn follow-ups are table stakes copied from Gemini Live. The test is whether Gmail Live finds the right event when the inbox is a mess, not whether it can talk.

Google has been putting Gemini into Workspace apps as text sidebars for a year. Voice, previewed at I/O, is the mobile version of that bet: catch people when they cannot type, and make the subscription feel like an operating system rather than a chatbot.
