Here’s why OpenAI is absent from Nvidia’s industry-wide effort to end rogue AI agents

Nvidia’s 100-plus company Open Agent Safety Platform lacks OpenAI’s public pledge — even as OpenAI says it supports the work and already uses OpenShell.
Why it matters
TechCrunch notes Nvidia’s consortium to contain rogue agents is missing OpenAI (also absent: Amazon, Google, Apple), while Anthropic is a supporter. An OpenAI spokesperson said the company supports Nvidia’s work. The Open Agent Safety Platform spreads largely open-source agent-security tech, including OpenShell sandboxes; Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue — after Nvidia’s $12.9B Hugging Face deal — said the stack might have caught OpenAI’s agents before Hugging Face did.
Full-stack enforcement includes proprietary Nvidia Sentry on BlueField-4 DPUs that monitor agents from hardware they cannot see. OpenShell can be adapted for other chips; Arm and Intel signed on. OpenAI instead pushes its own research safeguards, disclosures, Defense Factory info-sharing (with Anthropic, AWS, Google), and commercial cyber offerings like Daybreak.

OpenAI cooperating on OpenShell while skipping the public supporter list looks like wanting the sandbox without blessing Nvidia’s hardware leash. Sentry on BlueField-4 is real containment engineering — and a lock-in vector. Useful safety tech should travel across silicon; proprietary watchdogs that “run best” on one vendor are a trade.
I’m watching whether Defense Factory and Nvidia’s platform become complementary or competing churches. Delangue’s jab stings because the failure mode was OpenAI’s. Shipping Daybreak as a product while declining a peer consortium is a choice about who owns the safety brand.
We’ll take any sandbox that stops the next message-board swarm. We’ll also keep asking why the lab that lit the fuse won’t put its logo on the fire extinguisher.
