How Albertsons Companies is reimagining retail from the inside out

Albertsons expands OpenAI work — ChatGPT Enterprise inside, Safeway shopping inside ChatGPT for millions of weekly grocery trips.
Why it matters
OpenAI’s customer story says Albertsons Companies is widening use of ChatGPT Enterprise and the OpenAI API across retail tech and business teams, plus consumer experiences. A new Safeway experience in ChatGPT lets shoppers start from a recipe, photo, or prompt (“Plan pizza night for four”), build a cart with relevant products and savings, and check out at Safeway.
Jill Pavlovich, SVP Digital Customer Experience, calls it a practical way to cut friction. The ChatGPT shopping surface is planned to expand beyond Safeway to Albertsons, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, ACME, and Tom Thumb. The company cites more than 2,200 stores and over 36 million customers weekly; dunnhumby’s February 2026 tracker is quoted saying shoppers are more open to AI for groceries than other purchases.
From the desk
Grocery is a good proving ground for useful AI: high frequency, messy preferences, real baskets. Helping someone go from “pizza night” to a checkout link is the kind of assist we like when the prices and stock are true.
The enterprise half matters as much as the consumer widget. Merchants getting explainable promo insights from predictive models plus generative AI could be real leverage — or dashboard theater. We’re watching whether associates and merchants actually save time, not whether the case study sings.
Risks are familiar: hallucinated substitutions, privacy on household purchase graphs, and steering toward house brands without clear disclosure. If Albertsons keeps the human store ops loop in charge and the ChatGPT cart stays honest about availability, this is pro-tech retail done in the aisle where people already live.
Context
OpenAI is pushing vertical ChatGPT commerce experiences; Albertsons already had AI shopping assistant and Ask AI features this extends.
