Reimagining advertising with AI

OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT Ads—click an ad, optionally chat with a business-branded agent—plus prompt-built creatives, Ads Manager AI tools, and HubSpot/Shopify hooks.
Why it matters
OpenAI’s product post introduces AI-powered ChatGPT Ads experiences: Sponsored Agents for post-click conversations with clearly labeled business-sponsored agents; ad creation from a few prompts in ChatGPT Work; stronger Ads Manager creative tools; and first CRM/ecommerce integrations with HubSpot and Shopify.
Ads inside chat already change discovery. Sponsored Agents change the after-click: from landing page to guided sales dialogue inside ChatGPT.
That’s useful when labeled and optional. It’s manipulative when the boundary between helper and closer blurs.
From the desk
We’re watching OpenAI industrialize conversational commerce without pretending it’s neutral.
Sponsored Agents, per OpenAI, let a user who sees a relevant ad choose to start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent—ask fit questions, then click through when ready. Prompt-based ad creation and Ads Manager AI tools lower creative friction. HubSpot and Shopify integrations pull ads into existing merchant stacks.
Useful AI here means answering “will this table fit my space?” better than a static PDP. We’re for that when sponsorship is unmistakable and the user opts in.
The harm if it scales: parasocial selling, dark-pattern agents that feel like ChatGPT-the-assistant while optimizing conversion, and small merchants priced out of agent-quality creative. Also: ad-targeting logic meeting chat context is a privacy fault line.
I’m watching label prominence in the UI, opt-in rates versus accidental taps, and whether OpenAI publishes advertiser rules that ban impersonating the base assistant.
Context
ChatGPT Ads are OpenAI’s advertising product surface. Sponsored Agents are described as a test. HubSpot is named first CRM partner; Shopify first ecommerce partner.
