IBM Brings Bob to Self-Hosted and Air-Gapped Environments: Agentic Software Development Without Moving Your Code

IBM’s agentic coding platform Bob is GA for self-hosted and air-gapped shops — bring your own model, keep the code off the public internet.

Why it matters

Sana Hassan at MarkTechPost reports that IBM made self-hosted deployment of IBM Bob generally available. Bob is IBM’s agentic software development platform spanning understand, plan, execute and validate. Enterprises can now run it on premises, in private or sovereign clouds, and in air-gapped networks.

Self-hosted Bob includes the IDE experience, BobShell, parallel tool calling, agent harness, skills and modes, plus optional Premium Packages for Java Modernization, IBM i and IBM Z. IBM does not bundle a model: customers bring a supported one. For full isolation, the GA list includes NVIDIA Nemotron and Poolside Laguna on customer iron. Hybrid/private SaaS paths can reach Claude Sonnet 5.0, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.7 Flash and OpenAI GPT 5.6 Sol via approved private connectivity.

Pricing isn’t published; buyers request a demo. Roadmap talk includes a wider model portfolio and multi-model routing — not shipped yet.

From the desk

We’re for agentic coding that doesn’t force a bank’s core ledger into a public SaaS chat window. Air-gapped Bob is the enterprise version of the sovereignty story Europe keeps telling: useful agents, controlled blast radius. IBM’s differentiator in the MarkTechPost comparison isn’t “another Copilot clone” — it’s modernization of long-lived Java, IBM i and mainframe estates inside networks that cannot touch the public internet.

That’s a real job. Most coding-agent demos assume GitHub.com latency and cloud models. Regulated shops assume the opposite. BYOL self-hosted models plus hybrid routing for less sensitive work is a grown-up architecture: one developer experience, policy underneath.

The downside if this scales poorly is lock-in dressed as safety — sales-gated demos, unpublished prices, and a supported-model list that moves slower than the open-weight scene. Air gap also doesn’t magically make agents safe; it only keeps the traffic local. A bad tool call on a mainframe still hurts.

I’m watching early bank and sovereign-cloud case studies, and whether multi-model routing ships before competitors’ self-hosted stacks own the same modernization niche.

Context

MarkTechPost stacks Bob against GitLab Duo Agent Platform Self-Hosted, Mistral Vibe for Code Enterprise, and GitHub Copilot CLI with BYOK — similar isolation claims, different surfaces and commercial models.

Who feels it

Regulated enterprises
A GA path to agentic SDLC without moving source to a public cloud coding assistant — if you can host Nemotron or Laguna.
Mainframe & IBM i teams
Premium Packages aim agent help at estates Copilot-style tools usually ignore.
Cloud coding assistants
More pressure to offer real air-gapped or private-connectivity modes, not only SaaS.

What to watch

  1. Published pricing or reference architectures from early GA customers
  2. Expansion of the self-hosted supported-model list beyond Nemotron and Laguna
  3. Whether multi-model routing leaves the roadmap
