Meta admits Muse’s likeness to OpenClaw isn’t a coincidence

Early Muse users argued Meta’s agent felt like OpenClaw in a consumer wrapper. Meta Superintelligence Labs’ Nat Friedman answered on X: Muse was “definitely heavily inspired as a product by OpenClaw,” while insisting it was “built from scratch.”

That’s an unusually clean admission in an industry that usually murks influence. It also explains why Muse feels familiar — and why open-source agent harnesses now set the template Big Tech ships.

We’re taking Friedman at his word and still raising an eyebrow at the file tree.

After Ansh Nanda’s viral claim that Muse is OpenClaw for mainstream users — including a Muse chat calling the system-file overlap “a match” — others pointed to a shared SOUL.md pattern: Markdown that defines personality, tone, values, boundaries, and expertise. Reports said names matched and content was almost entirely the same. Asked why, Friedman didn’t deny it: the team thought OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger “got those things exactly right.”

Friedman says after using OpenClaw in January he bought hundreds of Mac minis for MSL, the team fell in love with personal agents, and Muse’s goal was something like OpenClaw made “safe and secure and easy to use” at billions of users. Steinberger was hired by OpenAI earlier this year after OpenClaw’s breakout. Muse has hit No. 1 on the U.S. App Store and, per TechCrunch’s cited data framing, is outpacing ChatGPT’s launch on an apples-to-apples platforms comparison.

Useful AI often starts as an open harness someone loved on a desk full of Mac minis. Meta packaging that taste for mass distribution could be good — safer defaults, easier install, wider reach. The downside is Meta’s familiar playbook: absorb the zeitgeist of a smaller inventor, ship the polished clone, let the origin story become a footnote. Open source means inspiration is legal; “nearly identical” soul files still feel like a shortcut dressed as tribute.

I’m watching whether Steinberger or the OpenClaw community push back, and whether Muse’s safety-and-scale claims show up as real guardrails or just the pitch that justifies the copy.
