Meta introduces camera-free AI glasses

Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses drop the camera on purpose — $349 audio-first frames meant to dodge the “pervert glasses” stigma while talking to Muse.
Why it matters
Camera smart glasses earned a creepy reputation when people used them to record without consent. Meta’s answer at Connect is Ray-Ban Meta Audio: camera-free glasses for music, podcasts, calls, translation, and Muse — starting at $349, designed with EssilorLuxottica.
Preorders open October 13. The bet is that audio-only can be a category people actually want to wear, closer to always-on AirPods than to a hidden camcorder on your face.
From the desk
We’re covering this as reputation repair with a real product wedge.
Without cameras, the frames can be slimmer — Meta claims 43 grams, up to 12 hours on device and 48 hours with the case, adjustable tips, swappable pads, overextension hinges, prescription options, 23 color/lens combos, and two new styles (Clubmaster and Burbank). Zuckerberg’s line was that once you get used to high-quality audio, you want it all the time; the company says it realized it could design a whole category around audio glasses.
Connect also refreshed the camera line: Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 with Wayfarer plus Aviator and Zena styles, 12 MP / 3K Ultra HD video, six-mic array, up to nine hours battery, more countries, and a Lisa partnership after Kylie Jenner. All Meta AI glasses get Muse. Teased extras include Dolby Atmos Capture, best-frame photo pick, landscape/portrait modes, hearing enhancements, “private processing” that Meta says keeps data from Meta’s view, and more audio modes.
Useful AI includes translation and Muse hands-free without forcing a camera into every social setting. The harm side does not vanish: audio glasses still capture conversations, and the camera Gen 3 line still ships into the same consent mess Meta tried to patch with LED-tamper camera disable. Splitting audio-only SKUs is a sane product response to “pervert glasses” backlash; it is not a substitute for norms and enforcement around recording.
I’m watching preorder demand on October 13 versus Gen 3 camera models, and whether “private processing” is independently inspectable. If Audio becomes the default comfortable Ray-Ban Meta, Meta gets volume without the worst optics. If buyers still treat any Meta glass as a spy tool, the rename will not save the category.
