Meta’s Muse Is Adults-Only. Why Does It Look Like a Kids’ Toy?

WIRED presses Meta on Muse’s Labubu-cute Jolly mascot and Tamagotchi-like hardware—adults-only rules wrapped in preschool shapes.

Why it matters

Meta says Muse is adults-only: date of birth gates, blocks on detected under-18s, extra checks on claimed adults. The mascot Jolly—and an upcoming Tamagotchi-style device—still read as kids’ media design.

Fairplay’s Josh Golin called it Teletubby-like, with rounded shapes that appeal to preschoolers. Harvard’s Julian De Freitas notes cute factors make products feel warm and less threatening—useful when attitudes toward Meta remain poor after addiction settlements.

Meta trains on Muse interactions unless users opt out. Design that drops your guard is the product strategy under scrutiny.

From the desk

We’re not confused about what Meta is doing. Delight is a growth lever. Mona Sarantakos has said the point was to feel less awkward than chatting with a corporate logo. Fair. Also incomplete.

A cuddly agent from a company that just settled social-addiction claims for up to $16.7 billion and added teen restrictions elsewhere is not a neutral aesthetic choice. Jathan Sadowski’s line is the one we’re carrying: cute and frictionless are how you stop asking critical questions.

Useful personal AI can be friendly without cosplaying a toddler toy. Adults-only enforcement that fights the visual language of the brand will leak around the edges—siblings, shared phones, intentional mis-ages.

If Muse scales as the default companion app, the mascot debate becomes a safety debate. We’re for agents people enjoy using. We’re against packaging surveillance comfort food as a Labubu.
