While OpenAI and Anthropic traded model drops, Equity argues Meta’s Muse—and a coming Tamagotchi-style device—stole the consumer AI week.

Why it matters

Anthropic shipped Opus 5.5 and OpenAI followed with GPT-6 updates about 90 minutes later—classic frontier pacing theater.

TechCrunch’s Equity podcast says the company that actually owned the week was Meta: Muse is reportedly outpacing ChatGPT’s early mobile numbers and is pointed at smart glasses plus a tiny Tamagotchi-style device.

The conversation is shifting from who topped a leaderboard to which assistant people open every day.

From the desk

We’re not dismissing Opus or GPT-6. Model drops still move markets and developer defaults. But the desk’s read matches Equity’s: the consumer story this week is distribution plus habit, and Meta has both.

Muse’s early download growth, Connect-stage roadmap, and hardware teases (glasses, charm-like wearable) are a bet that personal agents win as products you live with, not APIs you benchmark.

Useful AI for normal people looks like something that helps before work and after dinner—not another system card. The downside of Meta winning that slot is the same downside as every Meta surface: training on interactions unless you opt out, cute branding that lowers skepticism, and a social graph ready to cross-promote the agent into the feed.

OpenAI and Anthropic can pace the frontier all month. If Muse keeps the home-screen slot, the frontier is not where the habit forms.

Who feels it

Consumers
Weekly attention is moving toward agents and gadgets, not only chat model numbers.
Startups
Building on top of consumer agents means watching Meta’s connector and hardware roadmap as closely as OpenAI’s API.
Frontier labs
Model-drop theater may win developers while Meta wins daily opens.

What to watch

  1. Muse retention after the Connect marketing spike
  2. Ship dates for glasses integration and the Tamagotchi-style device
  3. Whether Opus/GPT-6 updates reclaim consumer narrative next week
