OpenAI’s new agent is a shot at Meta — but can it compete with free?

Dots vs Muse: OpenAI’s cute GPT-6 Astra agents chase Meta’s free VM — but start at ChatGPT Pro’s $100/month gate.
Why it matters
The Verge’s Hayden Field covers OpenAI DevDay’s Dots — personalizable blob agents on GPT-6 Astra — positioned against Meta’s Muse. Altman frames Dots for ambitious delegated work (QA, offsites, portfolio rebalancing); specialist Dots for accounting/legal are said to be coming, with Microsoft Agent 365 integration in progress.
Price is the gap: Muse includes a free dedicated VM for anyone with a Meta account; Dots are limited for now to Pro ($100/month) and up. OpenAI leaders stress long-horizon reliability, privacy (“OpenAI Private Intelligence”), and not repeating Muse’s Marketplace mishap that exposed a user’s address. Voice demos failed at DevDay; texting-your-agent is still “coming soon.”
From the desk
We’re split in a productive way. Ambition and security theater beat YOLO Facebook buys — Coates is right that OpenAI shouldn’t inflict Muse-class mistakes on 1.2 billion ChatGPT users. Charging Pro prices for compute-heavy agents is honest. It may also lose the consumer war the same way ChatGPT once won it: free and easy.
Meta’s distribution across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp is a structural advantage Google’s Gemini Spark also understands. OpenAI’s bet is that “chief of staff” depth plus enterprise doubling (per Sarah Friar to CNBC, as reported) outruns free blobs. Maybe for work. For mass market, Altman’s “someday” is doing a lot of lifting.
I’m watching whether Dots stay premium scaffolding for Agent 365 or drop in price before Muse habits set. Useful agents that are trustworthy are worth paying for — if they actually finish the offsite plan when the keynote lights go down.
Context
Lands amid Muse’s early traction, Instinct’s aggressive recommendations, and OpenAI’s fundraising/ARR headlines cited in the piece ($30B raise aim, ~$70B ARR reports).
Who feels it
- ChatGPT Pro users
- First cohort for Dots; judge on long-horizon task completion, not blob skins.
- Meta Muse users
- Free remains the wedge; trust incidents are the opening OpenAI is aiming at.
- Enterprise buyers
- Private Intelligence controls and Agent 365 hooks may matter more than consumer cuteness.
What to watch
- Dots price tier expansion below Pro
- Whether texting/voice features ship stable after DevDay stumbles
- Enterprise adoption vs Anthropic in knowledge-work agents
