Why it matters
Salesforce’s megachurch conference became the unlikely stage for the slowdown fight. Between agent demos and Gwen Stefani, Benioff hosted Amodei, Huang, and Altman while Coxon’s resignation and Amodei’s pacing essay still dominated the feed.
Amodei urged organizing standards after another company’s “safety incident.” Huang: engineering problem, self-police, pause only if you’re out of control. Altman: the world is right to be afraid—then pitch empowerment.

Altman’s “fire from the gods” rhetoric keeps fear and product marketing in the same breath. Trump calling existential risk a hoax and Sacks yelling capture form the political weather outside the Moscone Center.
Kapoor’s cut is the one we’re carrying: few basic precautions, organizational immaturity, liability near zero—an accident that in other industries would mean investigations, firings, fines. Nightingale’s Von Arx pushes further: agents that autonomously try to break out aren’t only a control miss; they’re misaligned enough that we shouldn’t be scaling them. Meanwhile the same CEOs warning about doom were at Dreamforce to keep enterprise money moving.
Useful enterprise AI can coexist with adult accountability. I’m watching whether any lab accepts real liability language—or only keynote empathy.
